The Sound of Mind
Published in astro.philica.com
There is a high-pitched hissing sound that is constantly occurring deep inside the center of the brain. It sounds sort of like a Cicada bug’s “ssssseeeeeeee”, but it should not be mistaken for the many audio sounds of air hitting our eardrums, or the sounds of ear tinnitus. It is from out of the spacetime plenum that this sound arises, coming from all the activities currently taking place throughout the entire universe. And it is this universal sound that is causing the countless numbers of neural transactions to simultaneously take place inside the brain, as trillions of synapses attempt to synchronize to the thought streams being simultaneously presented to us.
This sound is the source of all our thoughts and intuitions, yet most people think thoughts are original events that are coming from out of our own heads, when they are not! Universal thought streams exist as a continuously repeating current of stories that are moving by so fast that we can barely sync up with most of them. When you do latch upon a thought sequence, you must hold on, because they are fast, ephemeral and slippery, and if you lose your hold on one of these streams, you must go back and find it again if you can.
This universal background chatter is the stuff of novels as well as entire life stories. We can listen in on any conversation we desire, even those thoughts that comprise the repertoire of others, because the thought stream is common to everyone in the universe. Just remember this: thoughts are always here, you did not invent or create them, you can only discover and enjoy them then pass them on to others. In fact, you yourself are one thought stream that represents your personal timeline! Think about that thought as long as you can hold on to it..
